What is an HVRAS Measure-Up and Why Is It Required in Queensland?

How do I know I check if my Caravan or Trailer needs a HVRAS Measure-Up in Queensland?

  • The HVRAS (Heavy Vehicle Registration Assessment Scheme) is a Queensland-specific inspection required to ensure that heavy vehicles and trailers meet the correct dimensions, weight ratings, and identity requirements before they can be registered.

  • An HVRAS Measure-Up verifies:

  • ✅ Vehicle or trailer dimensions (height, width, length, overhang)

  • ✅ Tare weight and ATM/GVM ratings

  • ✅ Vehicle identification (VIN/chassis number match)

  • ✅ Correct placement and stamping of VIN

  • ✅ That the vehicle or trailer meets Queensland Transport standards

  • HVRAS inspections are required for:

  • Vehicles and trailers being registered in Queensland for the first time

  • Vehicles and trailers transferred from interstate

  • Homemade trailers and modifications

  • Vehicles or trailers that have missing or unreadable VINs

  • Vehicles that fall under the Queensland heavy vehicle category (4.5t to 16t+ depending on type)

  • HVRAS is NOT a safety certificate — it is an additional assessment used to confirm measurements, compliance, and identity.
This process ensures the vehicle or trailer is legally suitable for Queensland roads and prevents the registration of unsafe, non-compliant, or incorrectly identified vehicles.

  • Rivercity Roadworthys is authorised to perform HVRAS inspections, meaning you can complete the process without needing to visit Transport and Main Roads for a measure-up.

  • 1. What vehicles require an HVRAS Measure-Up?

  • Any heavy vehicle or trailer being registered in Queensland for the first time may require an HVRAS inspection. This includes trailers over 750kg ATM, heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes GVM, interstate transfers, homemade trailers, and vehicles with VIN discrepancies.

  • 2. Is an HVRAS the same as a Roadworthy (Safety Certificate)?

  • No. A Safety Certificate checks the condition and safety of the vehicle.
HVRAS checks measurements, identity, weight ratings, and compliance.
Some vehicles require both before registration.

  • 3. Do I need an HVRAS if my trailer or vehicle is already registered in Queensland?

  • In most cases, no. If the trailer or vehicle is already on the Queensland Transport system and has not been modified, an HVRAS is usually not required.
It is mainly needed for new registrations, interstate transfers, or modified/homemade trailers.

  • 4. How long does an HVRAS inspection take?

  • Most measure-ups take 30–60 minutes, depending on the type of vehicle or trailer and whether additional verification (such as VIN stamping or weighbridge documentation) is required.

  • 5. What happens if my VIN is missing, unreadable, or incorrect?

  • If the VIN cannot be verified, HVRAS cannot be completed until the issue is resolved.
You may require a Qld Transport-issued VIN plate or a restamping. Rivercity Roadworthys can advise you on the correct process and what documents are needed.

  • How much does a HVRAS measure up cost?

The cost of just a HVRAS Measure Up is $85 inc gst.

A HVRAS with a Roadworthy Inspection is $165 inc gst

Please note - Weekends and Public Holidays are extra

An additional $20 inc gst fee applies to sameday bookings (if spots are available)
